Two fundamental rules of Evidence

Rule 402
Relevant evidence admissible, except if prohibited by a rule. Non-relevant evidence is not admissible.

Rule 401
Relevant evidence: having a tendancy to make a fact of consequence (materiality prong: look to substantive law, elements, etc.) more probably or less probable than w/o evidence.
